The department

Birketts is recruiting for a driven and forward thinking Senior Associate to come and be part of our growing Corporate Tax team. Ranked tier 1 in Legal 500, you will join a highly successful, leading Corporate Tax team which sits within the Firm’s Corporate Services Division.

The team has particular expertise in:

Property related taxes

  • Stamp duty land tax
  • VAT 
  • Construction Industry Scheme
  • Capital Allowances
  • Annual Tax on Enveloped Dwellings
  • The taxation of strategic land development for landowners and developers
  • The taxation of agricultural businesses.

Corporate tax

  • Advising on the tax aspects of mergers and acquisitions (including drafting and negotiating tax warranties and tax covenants)
  • Private equity investment (EIS, SEIS and VCT)
  • Management buyouts (including employment related securities issues)
  • Corporate reorganisations and restructures (including company purchase of own shares)
  • Shareholders (including distributions to shareholders, close company tax issues)
  • Partnership taxation
  • Banking transactions (particularly withholding tax and related issues)

Employment compensation and benefits

  • The tax consequences of making payments on the termination of employment
  • Tax consequences of salary or bonus sacrifice
  • Supporting our employee incentives team in relation to tax issues arising from retaining and compensating employees.
The candidate

Our Corporate Tax team has become increasingly busy in recent years and with high profile tender wins that growth is set to continue. We are now looking to expand by recruiting a senior lawyer to play a leading role in our Tax team and to complement our wider market leading Real Estate and Corporate teams.

We are seeking a specialist tax solicitor with upwards of 6 years + PQE. You will ideally have a strong background advising on the tax aspects of mergers and acquisitions, corporate reorganisations and restructuring, as well as SDLT, VAT and employment taxes; experience with employee incentives would be highly beneficial.

You will ideally have management experience to supervise a team, with the technical ability to run and manage your own full caseload of files and be active in marketing and business development in order to expand this area of work and gain new clients.
